在美国，病人不看医生的名气，只看医生的资格。美国人通常认为，有同样行医资格的医生水平都是相当的。他们找医生的时候，只有符合资质的都可以。美国人对一家医院的治疗水平不满意，还可以另投他院，入院时，并不需要再向医生费一番口舌-----病人在不同诊所和医院就诊的记录都是可以互相查询的。医生轻点鼠标，就可以查看病人10年内再全美任何一家医院的诊疗记录。另外，美国大部分病人都购买了保险，他们的医疗支出都是由保险公司支付的，因此保险公司为了自己的利益，必然会严格地查账。一是查手术数量，而是查药物的使用情况，除了保险公司以外，医疗监管部门也在盯着。一旦发现医生有违规开处方的行为，立即给予警告乃至吊销行医执照的处罚。
